Rheumatic heart disease is a complication caused by rheumatic fever, this condition usually affects children and adolescents aged 5 - 15. An untreated strep throat is what causes rheumatic fever, that starts from a simple bacterial infection. The bacteria responsible for the strep throat is usually acquired at school, where students are usually clustered together for prolonged periods. The throat is the targeted area of infection, this is the reason strep throat is mistakenly associated with soar throat. The only difference between the two is that strep throat is caused by bacteria while a soar throat is caused by a virus. Both these conditions have similar symptoms and is the reason why throat infections should be taken seriously because it could be a strep throat condition, and this can progress to a life-threatening disease if left untreated. If strep throat is left to progress it can lead to rheumatic fever, this specific fever can cause the heart’s valves to stop working properly. When the heart valves are prevented from opening or closing properly, rheumatic heart disease has taken place.
When a person is diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease, they have to learn to live with it for the duration of their lives. Rheumatic heart disease can not be reversed like some heart conditions, it only puts a person at greater risk of experiencing a heart attack.
