What is jackfruit?
Jackfruit is a type of tree in the mulberry family. It originates in parts of Southern, and Southeast Asia. In Bangladesh, it is the national fruit, however there, it is known by the name Kathal. It is also found in East Africa, and throughout Brazil.
Jackfruit is the largest fruit in the world. Well, that comes from a tree. It can reach up to 80 pounds in weight, and 36 inches long by 20 inches in diameter. The interior consists of edible pods/bulbs that are yellow and banana-flavored.
It's huge, similar to a Papaya, and it's prickly on the outside. It resembles 'Durian', though the Jackfruit is typically larger in size. Inside, you will find pods (or bulbs), and they are often referred to as the seeds. The fleshy part, the "bulb" can be eaten raw, or sliced up and cooked.
When unripe and green, it has an extremely similar texture to chicken, making the perfect vegetarian substitute for meat. It's not everyday that you find good use for an unripened fruit.
When fully ripe, the unopened jackfruit has a strong impolite odor, while the pulp of the opened fruit smells of pineapple and banana.

Jackfruit contains loads of vitamins and minerals, and offer a great healthy addition to your diet. It contains cancer-fighting elements due to its isoflavones, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. It is also known for helping cure ulcers and indigestion.
